Sri Lanka is a popular place for logistical development due to its advantageous location along the key maritime and aviation routes in the South Asian region.

The country is a key logistics centre in the area, providing entrepot and transhipment services to top shipping lines and exporters due to its closeness to expanding markets and its previously developed air and seaports in Colombo and Hambantota. Based on the volume of containers handled over the previous five years, the World Shipping Council has consistently placed Sri Lanka's Colombo Port among the Top 50 World Container Ports, ahead of other South Asian ports.





Landscape Logistics in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan logistics services contribute 2.5% of the country's GDP, or about USD 2 billion, comes from logistics services in Sri Lanka. The domestic transit of passengers, fisheries, and interregional domestic cargo transportation are not included in the list of logistics services, which also includes container trucks, warehousing, ports, and shipping.

It is estimated that logistics account for 7% of all national exports. Over 40,000–50,000 individuals are directly employed full-time by the sector. Of the registered service providers, about 70% are local, and the remaining 30% are global. There are currently 500+ businesses registered with the Merchant Shipping Secretariat (MSS), which also includes clearing agents, as well as 130 shipping agencies, 120 freight forwarders, and 120 clearing agents. The country boasts the highest road density in South Asia, with 173.9 km, in addition to expanding its seaports.
